Golf Ball Construction – Building It Right

The basics of construction are straightforward. Every regulation golf ball must conform to USGA and R&A rules, including:

Golf Ball Construction – Building It Better

Golf ball construction varies by manufacturer. There are two piece golf balls. Wound golf balls. And multilayered golf balls. However, construction isn't synonymous with performance as it has been in the past. With a large core and a thin cover, two-piece balls are traditionally regarded as distance balls. Wound, three-piece balls on the other hand are categorized by softer feel and enhanced spin. Finally, multilayer golf balls are designed to generate longer distance off the tee as well as improved feel for shots around the green.

Golf Ball Construction – Hardness, Compression & Cover

Golf balls vary in hardness. A harder core reduces "ball deformation" at impact, resulting in higher initial velocity off the clubface and longer shots. However, a harder core sacrifices control, particularly around the greens, which many players prefer.

When it comes to compression, the most common ratings are 90 and 100 (though ratings can go lower than 70 and higher than 100). Golf balls with a 90 compression are softer than golf balls with a 100 compression. While the difference is minimal, golfers with a slower swing speed may prefer a golf ball with a low compression for added control.

The dimples on a golf ball create turbulence and lift. Turbulence helps air flow remain attached to the surface of the ball, while reducing aerodynamic drag throughout flight. When drag is reduced, the ball flies farther. The dimples also work to keep the flow attached during backspin, deflecting wake downward and lifting the ball upward.
